Black Radish Grocery

This early concept of the Black Radish grocery evokes the warmth and sense of community the organization is built around. The space is located in the newly constructed Chestnut Commons multi-family building in Cypress Hills, New York. The new grocery will incubate the organizational, material, and visual identity of the East Brooklyn Food Hub (EBFH) - a rapidly expanding organization that promotes a healthful community and life through a thoughtful engagement of local farms, vendors, and customers.

The design creates a contemporary shopping space that feels warm and embracing of its customers. The shelves of food, actively restocked each day, physically anchor the store by supporting a layered wood lattice ceiling that screens the building infrastructure above while dampening the sound to make the space feel more welcoming. This lattice echoes the embracing form of a growing tree and is inspired the sculptural delicacy found in the work of Martin Puryear.

The organization of the store will evolve further through design conversations with EBFH in the coming months as the many facets of the organization are given a functional life in their new home.

Peering out the windows, one envisions expanded seating during the fall, spring, and summer months that can be paired with Community Supported Agriculture(CA) for Black-owned Farms in the Hudson Valley that also represent another arm of the EBFH mission.

Potential layouts champion the connections between vendors with open and interactive sites of exchange. The design might utilize open ended grocery storage as a move away from corporate experiences of quotidian grocery aisles. Reclaimed organic and industrial materials would be used in the grocery layouts, with an emphasis on EBFH's mission -based resource aesthetic. The baffled ceilings might add an economical sense of beauty to the establishment, offering moments of light direction and acoustic control to partition the space.
